Around August 2002’s touring, Mates unleashed their rendition of Jackson Browne’s “These Days,” and is heavily influenced by Nico’s version of the song. “These Days” quickly became a live fan favorite and five months later, the band found themselves in the studio committing the song to analog. The song was recorded in preparation for the Mates’ Winter tour with Rainer Maria as well as Owen, Saturday Looks Good to Me, Redd Tape, and Dear Nora. Dear Nora are longtime tour buddies with the Mates and Katie does an excellent acoustic rendition of Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country.”
The original cover design experienced a number of printing issues. The main contributor to the problems was with the see-thru synthetic paper it was printed on (so that the vinyl color could be seen through the cover). The first pressing (600 each of yellow, white, or blue vinyl unexpectedly sold out before tour’s end. The 7” was repressed in March 2003 featuring a more “printer-friendly” die-cut cover.
